Kyoto, Japan

History

Kyoto was once Japan's capital city for more than 1,000 years until it was changed to Tokyo to control trade and have easy access to the West and is still largely thought of as Japan's heart due to how many historic monuments reside within it. It was originally founded in 794 by emperor Kammu and was laid out using inspiration from the grid model of Ghang'an in China. Because of its subtropical climate, these historic monuments are often "updated" on a fixed schedule (usually every few years) in order to maintain their structure.
