Here are some of the most visited attractions in Kyoto. As you can see, most of them are history-related, but don't let that deter you if you would prefer to get a dose of modern Japan, as Kyoto still offers plenty of that!

Fushimi-Inari Taisha Shrine

Fushimi-Inari Taisha Shrine (founded in AD 711) is one of the most well-known shrines in Japan. It features 1,000 arches that were built in 1499 and stretches four kilometers. It is dedicated to the goddess of rice-growing, and is still visited by tradesmen who wish for prosperity!

Kinkaku-ji: The Golden Pavilion

Kinkaku-ji: The Golden Pavilion was built in the 14th century for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu and is now serving as a Zen Buddhist temple. It is famous for being an incredibly beautiful sight, as it is built overlooking a scenic lake and is surrounded by lushious forest.

Katsura Imperial Villa

Katsura Imperial Villa is a garden that was was constructed in 1624 for Prince Hachijo Toshito and is absolutely stunning. It was designed in such a fashion that allows most everything to be seen from the front. It also has apassage that lead through an inner gate into a group of buildings at its center.
